As an older adult, there are two reasons why you might have to take a driving test:
There is more than one test that is used to make sure that you can drive safely. The tests you take to renew your driver's license are different than the test you take if you have a health problem that might make it dangerous for you to drive. Read more about these different tests below.
Once you turn 80, you have to renew your driver's license every two years. To renew your driver's license, you have to take a couple of tests that show you can still drive safely. One test checks your eyesight, and the other is one that you take in a classroom to make sure your brain still works as well as it used to. This test is a pencil and paper activity. The Ministry of Transportation has an example of one of these brain tests so that you know what to expect.
For step by step instructions on how to renew your license after age 80, visit the Ministry of Transportation website.
Your doctor may tell you that because of a health problem, you need to take a driving test so that your driver's license isn't cancelled by the Ministry of Transportation. This happens if you have a health problem that could make it dangerous for you to drive (for example, dementia or epilepsy). You must prove that your health problems don't make it unsafe for you to drive. This kind of test is done in your own car, on the road.
The HNHB Healthline has a list of driving centres you can call to arrange a test.
